SPENCER – Police Chief Michael Befford will retire effective September 12.
Before his promotion to chief of police in March 2023, Befford was appointed sergeant in January 1998 and lieutenant in December 2019.
From 1986-1998, he worked for the North Brookfield police department.
Although Befford said he has no immediate plans for the future, he acknowledges there are aspects of the position he knows he will miss, namely, “the people, the purpose, the camaraderie, the family at Spencer PD and the opportunity to serve.”
During his tenure with the police department, Befford said he has witnessed a shift in the types of issues affecting the community.
“While traditional crime remains a concern, a growing number of calls involve mental health crises, substance abuse and individuals in need of services rather than enforcement,” the police chief noted.
Befford thinks the changes reflect “broader societal challenges,” such as increased stress, isolation and limited access to mental health resources.
“It’s required law enforcement to adapt, work more closely with healthcare providers and find ways to support people who are often facing difficult personal struggles rather than criminal intent,” he said.
The job can be very challenging, Befford noted, citing “assuring officers go home safe at the end of shifts, carrying the responsibility 24/7, personnel issues and losing staff to other employment,” as some examples.
The chief received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Westfield State College and a master of arts in criminal justice administration from Anna Maria College.
With retirement next month, Befford thanked all members of the police department for their “dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment” to serving the community.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve alongside such an outstanding group of men and women,” he said. “Your hard work, sacrifice and support have made our department stronger and have made my career truly meaningful.”
Befford said he has complete confidence in the future of the police department.
“I am deeply grateful for the friendships, memories, and trust we’ve shared. I leave with great pride in all that we have accomplished together,” he added.
He also expressed appreciation to Town Administrator Jeff Bridges, present and past Boards of Selectmen, department heads and town staff for the trust they placed in him to serve as well as for their support and dedication.
Befford noted, “Together, we have faced challenges, successes and worked toward a common goal of making our town a safe place. I am grateful for the partnerships we’ve built, the trust you’ve placed in our department, and the teamwork that has helped our community.”
Additionally, the police chief thanked Spencer residents for the trust and support they have shown him over the years.
Befford feels it has been “an honor and a privilege,” to serve as Spencer’s police chief.
“Together, we have built strong relationships and a safer, stronger community,” he said. “I’m grateful for your partnership, your encouragement, and the opportunity to serve this town that I have been proud to call home for the past 28 years.
As I retire, I do so with heartfelt appreciation and confidence in the future of the department and the community,” Befford added.
