SPENCER – Residents will soon have more choices for electrical service as the town’s new endeavor: Spencer Electric Choice, begins to take shape.

Voters agreed some time ago to create an electric aggregation program and after months of meetings and planning, they’ll learn more about the process at a public hearing next month.

Selectmen met with Paul Gromer from Mass. Power Choice on Monday and learned that aggregation – group buying of electricity – will likely be available in 2025. The program will automatically enroll National Grid customers – unless they opt out – and expected to provide a savings on the cost of electricity for those who take part.

Resident who are already using a third party for electricity won’t be switched to the new program unless they choose to.

Spencer Electric Choice will offer a standard (default) service that includes some renewable energy and has a fixed price.

A 100 percent renewable option, which will be more expensive, is alo offered, or customers can opt out and stay with National Grid, Gromer explained.

Customers of National Grid will automatically be switched to the new offering in accordance with state law, Gromer said.

The process includes a public information session which is slated for April 17, a comment period followed by the presentation of the proposal to the state Department of Energy Resources for review and then to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, Gromer said.

Once that process is complete, something Gromer expects will take several months, the town can seek a supplier of electricity, enter into an agreement and begin the program.

Information is already available online at spencerelectricchoice.com.
