SPENCER – A 22-year-old Spencer man was seriously injured in a head-on collision that may have been caused by his efforts to swat at an insect as he drove on Meadow Road Thursday (May 2, 2024).
Police were called to an area near 44 Meadow Road just before 4 p.m. and found a 2013 Honda Civic had collided with a 2018 Dodge Ram pickup, Lt. Norman Hodgerney said.
The driver of the Honda, Jared Goodrow of Spencer, was trapped inside the vehicle and firefighters were called to free him from the wreckage.
Fire Chief Robert Parsons said 6 firefighters who responded spent about 25 minutes cutting off the door and roof of the car before “rolling back” the dashboard to free Goodrow.
“He was heavily entrapped,” Parsons said.
Goodrow sustained “serious but not life-threatening injuries” to his left side and was being treated at UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, Hodgerney said.
The driver of the truck, Evan Bercume, also of Spencer, sustained minor injuries and declined to be taken to a hospital, police said.
The incident forced the closure of Meadow Street for some time while rescue workers freed the victim and investigators worked to determine what caused the crash.
Hodgerney said the crash remains under investigation but preliminary reports indicate that Goodrow was attempting to swat at a bug, possibly a bee that had flown into the car, causing the car to cross the center line and strike the truck head-on.
As of Monday, no charges had been filed, Hodgerney said.
