SPENCER – On April 9, Spencer firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire on 130 Northwest Road at approximately 1 a.m.
Captain Jonathan Thibault noted that a second alarm was transmitted enroute followed by a third alarm upon arrival at the scene when firefighters arrived to heavy fire through the roof, which was “well involved.”
“When responding units get on scene, they recognize when more manpower and resources are needed,” he explained, speaking about when multiple alarms get activated.
Multiple mutual aid companies came to assist Spencer, including from Oakham, North Brookfield, East Brookfield, Brookfield, Leicester, Rutland, Paxton, Southbridge and Charlton.
Another factor making this fire a major event is the fact there are no hydrants in that area of town, Thibault said. The lack of available water contributed to the need for more resources to shuttle water from a nearby lake located just over the Oakham line.
Thibault said it is “very typical” in central Massachusetts to rely on static water sources to put out fires.
He said there were no injuries and everyone was evacuated from the home and safe.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
