SPENCER – Thanks to the Spencer Trailways organization, the town’s senior center will have its exercise room floors replaced and its walking group will receive new supplies.
Last week, Spencer Trailways presented senior center director April Caruso with a donation of $11,543.
Caruso said it is her understanding the nonprofit group was responsible for cleaning up the rail trail and installing benches there. Upon its dissolution, Spencer Trailways recognized how the senior citizens’ walking group members get their steps in from May to October at O’Gara Park and Wire Village Road. They presented the monetary gift in support of those efforts.
Caruso said the donation came as a complete surprise, and made her feel “elated.”
“We never get donations like this one,” Caruso noted, adding that occasionally when someone passes away, a donation may be given in their memory, more along the lines of $20-$25.
“We’re thrilled,” Caruso added, noting that the money will be put to good use—as the floors upstairs have broken tiles and are in disrepair. She said that they will combine $5,000 from this donation with $5,000 from the Friends of the Senior Center to get the work done.
The remainder will buy things for the walkers like backpacks, water bottles, pedometers and walking sticks.
She said a large group of seniors participate in the walking program, which has been ongoing for several years. The members keep track of the number of steps or hours they accomplish and submit those to the Massachusetts Council on Aging, becoming eligible for drawings with $50 gift card prizes.
Caruso expressed gratitude to Spencer Trailways, noting that the seniors would benefit greatly from the improvements and enhancements.
“It’s awesome,” she added. “This will be so useful for all of us at the senior center.”
