SPENCER/EAST BROOKFIELD – The David Prouty High School Building Committee reviewed its project’s finances and approved several change orders during a brief meeting on March 19.

Nick Pimentel, representing Colliers (owner’s project manager), reminded the board about an anticipated substantial completion date of August 14 and gave a budget update.

Pimentel said there is just over $1 million in likely costs expected. That will leave a balance of $572,000 in contingency funds. He explained there is an additional $1.3 million unspent in the budget, bringing the remaining available funds to $1.8 million.

During the first week in April, platform staging will be set up in the entirety of the auditorium. The work is expected to take one to two months.

Other upcoming work includes finishing site improvements in the courtyard; completing the last 5% of roofing; installing windows and wrapping up masonry.

Architect Kristian Whitsett of Jones Whitsett outlined change order requests totaling $99,795, which the committee approved.

Examples of items were:

  • $10,342 to repair chimney concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls in the A building that will now serve as interior walls of the new electrical room. Previously approved was $9,014 for this purpose but the actual cost of labor and materials realized during the work came in slightly higher.
  • $11,666 to infill existing openings in the auditorium masonry walls, which Whitsett said were beyond the scope of what the mason was responsible for at the time of the bid.
  • $9,083 to change the flooring in the dry storage room within the kitchen from quarry tile to sealed concrete.
  • $21,738 to install new full height louvered doors at the individual use bathrooms throughout the high school.

The largest change order at $55,757 was to pay contractor H. Carr for metal stud and drywall walls in the A building. Whitsett said the existing CMU corridor walls were not structurally sound.

Whitsett noted the previously “rough order of magnitude” (an early stage estimate) was $325,000 and this change order reflects the additional concrete contractor’s price of $36,701 and drywall and other costs.

Some committee members expressed interest in seeing the project’s progress, so a tour was tentatively set for 5 p.m. before the next meeting on April 16 at 6 p.m.
