Director of Athletics Thomas Miller spoke to the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School Committee on October 8 about leaving the Southern Worcester County League (SWCL) to create a “super league,” to be called Central Mass Athletic Conference.
Miller said the change would allow the Spencer-East Brookfield teams to play against athletes with similar ability levels and not by population. Competing against soccer, baseball and other teams from Auburn and Grafton habitually sees Spencer-East Brookfield “beaten badly,” he said.
He said vying in this mismatched way does not benefit either side.
The schedule would have 10-12 games and Miller would find an additional seven to comprise a season.
Miller said depending on the sport, athletes would belong in divisions appropriate to their “power ranking.” For example, the girls soccer team would likely be in Division A or B, with boys basketball also put in a higher division.
Conversely, the baseball team would probably be in Division D, Miller said.
The athletic director said a vote is expected on the issue by Dec. 1, with this year being the last for SWCL.
“It would be nice to see fair competition,” said School Committee member Heather Messier. “I’m thrilled to see this happening.”
Miller added the format would be re-evaluated every two years.
He also spoke about how helpful the new vans have been in transporting smaller teams like cross country and golf. They also represent a cost savings not having to use yellow buses for teams with fewer members.
In other business, Superintendent Paul Haughey reported that enrollment, as of October 8, totaled 1,435 students.
Haughey invited School Committee members to take tours of the buildings to see first-hand what the district is doing. He also suggested they meet with him to discuss his goals.
“(Let’s) have a dialogue on what we do to be better as a district and have kind of a reset , starting over after the pandemic,” Haughey said.
