SPENCER – Two Proposition 2 ½ override questions on the May 13 election ballot failed and the Board of Selectmen will have a new member, according to preliminary results posted by the town clerk.

The override questions sought $830,000 to pay the regional school district’s required local contribution; $150,000 for the Spencer Rescue Squad contract; and $368,390 to fund four firefighters currently paid for by a grant.

The second question asked for $211,500 to fund a highway department employee ($88,500) and a police officer ($123,000).

The only contested race on the ballot was for Board of Selectmen with two seats open.

Incumbent Gary Woodbury received 1,039 votes, while challenger Jonathan Viner got 805.

Anthony Pepe was not re-elected, receiving 642 votes.

The rest of the seats went unchallenged with the following (preliminary) vote totals:

Running without challengers are the following: Jason Monette, Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School Committee, 1,136; William Shemeth, moderator, 1,076; Jennifer Reil, Southern Worcester County Regional Vocational School, 1,025; Virginia Davidson, library trustee, 1,101; Martin German Jr., park commissioner, 1,106; Stanley Davis, water commissioner, 1,057; and Francis White, sewer commissioner, 1,035.

Sixteen percent or 1,511 voters turned out at the polls out of Spencer’s 9,668 registered voters.
