SPENCER – Spencer police and regional law enforcement agencies responded to a shooting incident Tuesday evening that left one police officer injured and a suspect dead at the Big Y Shopping Plaza on Main Street.
Authorities said Spencer Police were first dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. to the area of 20 Main St. after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an individual suffering from a gunshot wound near a nearby multi-family home. Police have not released information about that person’s condition.

According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, officers later received information that a person believed to be involved in the initial shooting was seen near West Main Street. When officers attempted to make contact, the individual produced a firearm and opened fire, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect then ran into the Family Dollar store at the Big Y plaza, where police evacuated the building and surrounding area. Investigators said the suspect barricaded himself inside a bathroom and again fired shots toward officers, striking a police officer during the confrontation.
The injured officer is a member of the Millbury Police Department who was assisting Spencer Police as part of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, or CEMLEC. The officer was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, where officials said he is in stable condition and expected to recover.
Police said the suspect was killed during a subsequent exchange of gunfire inside the plaza. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released and will be made public after family members are notified.
The scene remained active for several hours as investigators processed the area. The incident is being jointly investigated by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Spencer Police Department.
