Lieutenant Norman Hodgerney Jr. of the Spencer Police Department will receive the Blue & Gold Award from the National Exchange Club at a ceremony at 308 Lakeside in East Brookfield on October 8.

The presentation will be made during The Exchange Club of Spencer‘s meeting. The honor recognizes Hodgerney’s dedication to supporting the homeless community in Spencer.

The Spencer Police Department was spurred to help this cause following issuance of a troubling annual homeless census by Open Sky in 2023. Since then, the department has collaborated with Open Sky and the Central Mass Housing Alliance to  provide services and housing for the local homeless population.

The Exchange Club recognizes law enforcement, firefighters and other first responders for their community service with the Blue & Gold Award .

“The award acknowledges bravery, sacrifice and dedication to protecting their citizens and ensuring public safety,” according to Patrick George, an Exchange Club member. “This award celebrates those who go above and beyond in service to their community.”

Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1911, The National Exchange Club is a service organization dedicated to promoting community service, leadership and civic responsibility. Members of the Exchange Clubs volunteer in various activities and initiatives aimed at improving their communities.
