SPENCER – A 64-year-old man sustained serious injuries while working at a construction site at the town’s wastewater treatment facility on Monday (Dec. 11, 2023).

Police said the man was apparently on a ladder inside a partially constructed, empty tank when he fell about 12 feet, sustaining an injury to his head. The incident happened at about 1 p.m. at the plant at 69 West Main St.

Firefighters were able to use ladders to reach the man and a crane on scene was used to lift him from the hole.

The man was taken by the Leicester Ambulance to the Spencer Fire Station where he was then transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus by LifeFlight medical helicopter, a fire official said.

Police Chief Michael Befford said the man, who is from Leominster, was reportedly improving and remained hospitalized on Tuesday.

He said reports from the incident were requested by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for review.

The tank is part of a $41 million project to improve the Wastewater Treatment Plant to “address upcoming phosphorus and copper limits, achieve nitrogen removal goals, and replace aging infrastructure,” according to the website for C.H. Nickerson, the general contractor for the project.

The construction of several tanks for various uses is part of the project, the website states.
