SPENCER – Spencer firefighters, with assistance from mutual aid, responded to a multiple alarm fire on Dec. 22, that started on  4 East Avenue and quickly spread. The fire destroyed two homes and damaged another.

Firefighters had to battle not only the flames, but propane tanks and fireworks shooting off in the basement of the first house, Spencer Fire Chief Robert Parsons told news outlets.

Upon arrival, the first structure was already gone and responders tried to save the other two in frigid conditions. Because there are no hydrants in the area, tankers shuttled water and portable pumps drew water out of Thompson Pond.

There were no reported injuries but two of the families lost everything.

Firefighters from Spencer Fire & Emergency Services were assisted by fire departments from Leicester, Paxton, Rutland, Brookfield, East Brookfield and North Brookfield.

In addition, personnel from Sturbridge and Brookfield provided coverage at the Spencer station and Southbridge responded to Sturbridge’s calls during those hours when resources were busy at the scene.
