SPENCER – The town will work with the state Department of Transportation to determine the best course of action to make the intersection of Meadow Road and Pleasant Street safer following a fatal crash last week.
Carl Kwiatkowski, who lives on Meadow Road, pleaded with Selectmen at their meeting on Monday (Feb. 26, 2024) to add a flashing light at the intersection.
“Why can’t they put a light above the road?” Kwiatkowski said. “Today I was at the stop sign at Meadow Road to go up Pleasant Street and a car came, and he lost control. He was coming so fast around the corner.”
He also reminded the board that an elderly woman was killed in a 2-vehicle crash at the intersection at about 1:15 Thursday afternoon.
The crash was the second at the intersection in 24 hours, Lt. Norman Hodgerney said, though the first was less serious. In the fatality, early indications were that the driver of the car in which a woman died, may have missed the stop sign on Meadow Road, though the crash remains under investigation.
Selectman Ralph Hicks said the problem seems to be with drivers on Meadow Road who run the stop sign.
Hicks suggested a solar powered stop sign surrounded by flashing lights on Meadow Road.
“I agree, something needs to be done to slow them down,” Hicks said.
Kwiatkowski that might help on Meadow Road but he believes that traffic on Pleasant Street, which is Route 31, also needs a device to signal drivers to slow down.
Hicks said the town should study what would be best and Town Administrator Jeffrey Bridges said that would be necessary to determine whether additional traffic control devices are needed.
The intersection has been the scene of many crashes over the years, some serious, police said.
Board members asked Utilities and Facilities Director Peter Boria to work with the state to formulate a plan to improve safety at the intersection.
