SPENCER – An elderly woman was killed in a 2-vehicle crash on Pleasant Street early Thursday (Feb. 22, 2024) afternoon.
The crash happened at about 1:15 p.m. at the intersection of Meadow Road when a Jeep Compass and a sedan with two elderly people inside collided, Spencer Police Lt. Norman Hodgerney said.
The woman who died was a passenger in the sedan, Hodgerney said. The male driver was also injured and taken to a Worcester Hospital by ambulance. A female driving the Compass was not injured, he said. None of those involved are Spencer residents, he said.
The sedan came to rest in a nearby field after the crash and police believe it had been headed east toward Wire Village, Hodgerney said, adding that early indications are that the sedan may not have stopped for a stop sign at the intersection.
Investigators believe the Compass, which was headed north, struck the passenger’s side of the sedan, Hodgerney said.
Firefighters were called to the scene to extricate the victims and the road was closed for more than 3 hours as members of the Central Mass. Law Enforcement Council’s Collision Reconstruction worked to determine what caused the crash.
Police declined to identify the victim until her family members had been notified.
The crash was the second at the intersection in 24 hours and, Hodgerney said, though the first was less serious.
The intersection has been the scene of several crashes in recent years, he said.
