There’s still time on Thursday, August 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to participate in the First Rapscallion/HOPS Foundation derby car fundraiser. Come on down to the Rapscallion Spencer located on 8 Meadow Road to support the community.

With a minimum $15 donation, you can have a square on the car to write a personal message which will be on full display when the Demo Derby gets underway at the Spencer Fair on Friday, August 30.

Chris Lindquist, a long-time mug member and HOPS board member, donated the car and spent many hours along with a few other members getting it ready. His helpers included Russell Snow, Ron Scheyd, Sierra Tucker and John Cloutier, who hand-painted the Rapscallion name on the car.

Proceeds from this event, including any prize money won, will be added to the HOPS Foundation reserves to be distributed in the future.

HOPS stands for Helping Others through Philanthropic Support and was formed by mug members at Spencer and Sturbridge Rapscallion. The organization provides financial support to mug members in need and community charitable organizations.

Over the past year, the foundation held several initiatives to raise funds including the sale of bracelets to fund their Spencer Christmas parade float last November. With a first-place prize win, sale of props and excess funds, HOPS was able to give a $1,000 donation to a local organization and put the remainder in the foundation’s reserves.

HOPS also had food drive boxes at its Spencer and Sturbridge locations that benefited Mary, Queen of the Rosary food pantry in Spencer and the Tri-Community food pantry in Wales.

In December, the organization helped 45 Spencer families in need with its giving trees at both locations and in partnership with Spencer’s Toys for Joys program

More recently, HOPS held a chili cook-off with proceeds going to a Rapscallion mug club member in need as well as the foundation’s reserves.

In June, Second Chance Animal Shelter benefited from donation boxes in Spencer and Sturbridge for food and supplies.
