SPENCER/EAST BROOKFIELD – David Prouty High School will reopen to students and staff on Monday, January 5, following a temporary closure caused by a sprinkler system failure that resulted in water damage just before the holiday break.
Superintendent of Schools Paul Haughey announced that the building has been fully cleared for occupancy after inspections and remediation work were completed in coordination with Colliers, Fontaine Brothers, local inspectional services, and safety officials from the Spencer Fire Department.
The high school has been closed since December 18, after a sprinkler main line burst on the second floor on December 16, causing damage to both the second and main floors of the building. District officials initially anticipated reopening after the break but emphasized that additional time was needed to complete repairs and confirm the facility’s safety for students and staff.
Students will return on a two-hour delayed opening schedule, with classes beginning at 9:45 a.m. Bus transportation will operate on a delayed schedule, and lunch service will be provided. Principal LeFreniere is expected to share a modified bell schedule with families ahead of the reopening.
“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our local fire department, inspectional services, and our dedicated construction team at Fontaine Brothers for their tireless work together over the last two weeks,” Haughey said in a statement. “Their partnership has been vital in ensuring a safe return to the classroom for our staff and students.”
District officials reiterated that safety remains the top priority and encouraged families to monitor the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District website for any additional updates related to the reopening of David Prouty High School.
