SPENCER/EAST BROOKFIELD – The Building Committee for the David Prouty High School project heard work is proceeding at “full speed,” in its last nine months, according to developers. At its November 20 meeting, the board approved a series of change orders and other “not to exceed,” amounts and looked at photos of progress being made.

The list of change orders totaling $153,049 were outlined by Kristian Whitsett from architectural firm Jones Whitsett.

He said that a change from the original design resulted in a sliding door and wood door in the life skills room, separating it from the kitchen and a second door added to the washer/dryer room at a cost of $12,562.

For $25,268, a steel angle was added at the auditorium wall to support the existing exterior and brick façade so the pressure from the soil below did not damage the brick façade above the grade.

Another approval was given in the amount of $16,242 for “A” wing roof cleanup. Whitsett explained that to have the existing roof be re-used, remnants of the 1967 tar and gravel roof had to be removed prior to when the new roof is installed and structural improvements take place.

Whitsett said the tar and concrete were still adhered to the metal deck flute of the existing roof.

Also roof-related was an expenditure of $16,099  to replace existing roof joists. The idea originally was to re-use them, but there was too much damage and bending to make that approach feasible.

Nick Pimentel of Fontaine Brothers presented two “not to exceed” proposals, which were also approved and totaled $15,080.

One NTE of $9,014 was to clean the existing CMU walls of the old chimney. Pimentel said the grout was not flush with the CMU and needed to be cleaned and removed before the electrician could continue to mount the electrical panels.

The other NTE item of $6,066 was for costs associated with installing new storm piping at the auditorium stage.

The committee also agreed to a NTE amount of $1.5 million, which was not a new expenditure, but rather funds moved from one account in the budget to another so that Fontaine Brothers can pay the plumber through October 31 rather than have to wait until January 2026.

In other business, the board looked at photos in the north wing of footing work; the catwalk above the stage as well as upgrades to the auditorium; the electrical room inside the “A” wing; and more.

During the winter months, the committee will continue to have hybrid meetings unless there is bad weather. The next scheduled dates are December 18 and January 15, beginning at 6 p.m.
