SPENCER/EAST BROOKFIELD – At its May meeting, the David Prouty High School Building Committee approved $124,705 worth of change orders. The funding was for work ranging from auditorium stage leveling and catwalk modifications to pre-K playground re-design and chain link fence installation.
Kristian Whitsett of architectural firm Jones & Whitsett presented the list for consideration. It included $17,366 to add new metal and gypsum walls and ceiling to the auditorium stage. Whitsett said the work went beyond what the contractor was responsible for when they bid the project.
Another was a request for $19,569 to level the existing concrete slab in the auditorium stage so the wood flooring can be installed “plumb and aligned,” with the millwork at the front of the stage.
A smaller item approved was $8,066 to add an acoustic ceiling and sound dampening to help prevent noise reaching the administrative office directly above the alternative physical education and weight room.
Others were $1,768 to change one of the bucket-style swings to a molded bucket-style swing with straps at the pre-K playground; $8,478 to round off the edges of the granite blocks surrounding the slides; and $5,946 to put a chain link fence at the bottom of the grand stand handicap ramp for public safety.
The building committee also approved invoices totaling $2.2 million.
Nick Pimentel of Colliers (owner’s project manager) reported as a team with Fontaine Brothers, Jones & Whitsett and testing vendors, they expect $810,000 worth of costs between now and the end of the project.
That leaves a balance in contingency of $471,000.
He said the substantial completion date of August 14 is still on schedule and “there’s a lot going on,” in terms of landscaping, paving and other work.
Pimentel noted there will be 60 workers per day throughout the summer to finish the project. Superintendent Paul Haughey said the priority has to be giving the crews the time and space they need to meet the deadline.
Any walk throughs need to be put off for that reason, Haughey said.
The next meeting is set for July 16.
