SPENCER – A 75-year-old Barre man was arrested Wednesday (Oct. 5, 2023) after he allegedly drove on the wrong side of Route 9, abruptly turned on to Pleasant Street and struck a motorcycle, injuring the driver.
James Hammond of Barre was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, a marked lanes violation, and other driving infractions, Spencer Police Lt. Norman Hodgerney said.
The crash happened at around 6:15 p.m. Several witnesses told police they’d seen Hammond’s 2017 Hyundai Elantra headed east on the westbound lane of Route 9 just before the crash, according to Hodgerney.
“He apparently made a sudden left on to Pleasant Street and struck the motorcycle which was stopped at the light,” Hodgerney said, adding that the motorcycle was dragged a short distance as other motorists yelled for Hammond to stop.
The 69-year-old driver of the 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle sustained a serious leg injury along with injuries to his shoulder, neck and back, Hodgerney said.
The injured man is from Leicester, according to Hodgerney.
Police said Hammond was slated for arraignment in Western Worcester District Court in East Brookfield on Thursday.
